The history of Cabarete is profoundly tied to the history of the Dominican Republic, to the history of Spain and the evolution of the Caribbean until today...an important worldwide tourist destination. We start our trip through history of Cabarete, Dominican Republic with the aborigines that once lived on htese lands. They came all the way from the estuary of the Orinoco River in Venezuela and were the first settlers on the archipelago and what we know today as Dominican Republic. The Tainos were part of a modest and pacifist town that lived off of agriculture, fishing and livestock. There religion was polytheism.
In 1492 history makes a strong turn with the discovering of America by Christopher Columbus and it´s 3 ships, the Nina the Pinta and the Santa Maria. They disembarked here in 1492 on the 5th of December and named this island La Espanola.
After the disembarkment the natives were converted into the Catholic Faith and little by little the church began building it´s first temples, until times of instability in the 16th century to be exact, when pirates, started to ruin the island. The most incisive pirate that came to the island was Sir Francis Drake, one of the best known british pirates.
The island went from the hands of the French and in 1805 gained it´s independence from Haiti, and later was invaded by North Americans. Before this however the Dominican Republic had ganed its independence from Haiti in the 19th century.
Today, the Dominican Republic is a small Caribbean paradise. It´s main source of income comes from tourism and agriculture, and sugar cane.
